VTEC Spool Valve Filter Screen
This small filter plays a big role in your Honda Element’s VTEC system.
The spool valve filter screen sits inside the VTEC assembly and is responsible for keeping debris out of the oil passages that control valve timing. When it becomes clogged or restricted, it can lead to VTEC-related codes, poor performance, or inconsistent engagement.
This is one of the most commonly overlooked causes of VTEC issues.
🔧 What This Part Does
• Filters oil before it enters the VTEC spool valve
• Helps maintain proper oil flow and pressure
• Protects internal VTEC components from contamination
A restricted or dirty screen can prevent the system from operating correctly—even if the rest of the components are functioning.
⚠️ Common Symptoms of a Clogged Filter
• VTEC codes (P2646, P2647, etc.)
• Loss of power at higher RPM
• Intermittent VTEC engagement
• Engine feels sluggish under load
🛠️ When to Replace It
• During VTEC troubleshooting
• When replacing the spool valve assembly
• As preventative maintenance on higher-mileage vehicles

If you’re already in there, it’s worth replacing.
