Overview #
The Honda Element center stack assembly, also referred to as the center panel assembly, is the molded plastic trim panel that houses the center air vents, hazard switch, audio system, climate controls, shifter, and related indicators. It forms the primary structural and cosmetic interface for the center dashboard controls.
On the Honda Element, this component is known to be susceptible to cracking, UV degradation, and mounting point failure, particularly on later model years. Replacement options have become increasingly limited due to part discontinuation and design changes across production years.
Background #
Honda revised the center stack assembly design during the Element’s production run. Early models used thicker, more durable plastics and placed the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) indicator light within the instrument cluster. Later models relocated the SRS indicator to the center stack itself, requiring changes to the panel design and mounting features.
As a result, while center stack assemblies mount the same way and look similar, they are not universally interchangeable across all years unless modified.
Affected Years #
2003–2006 #
- Manual and automatic transmissions
- SRS indicator located in the instrument cluster
- Thicker, more durable plastic construction
- Fewer known cracking issues
2007–2011 #
- Manual and automatic transmissions
- SRS indicator relocated to the center stack (between the vents)
- Thinner plastic construction
- Increased susceptibility to UV damage and breakage
Color variations (2007–2011):
- Gray interior trim (standard models)
- Dark Interior variant (Standard models)
- Black interior with piano black finish (Element SC)
See chart below for part numbers.
Variations and Compatibility #
There are three primary center stack variations relevant to most owners:
- 2003–2006 (All trims)
- No SRS indicator provision in the panel
- Most durable version
- 2007–2011 (Standard models)
- Integrated SRS indicator between vents
- Gray interior finish
- 2007–2011 (Element SC)
- Integrated SRS indicator
- Black interior with piano black finish
Due to differences in SRS indicator placement and mounting points, 2007–2011 vehicles cannot directly use a 2003–2006 center stack without modification.
Construction and Removable Components #
A common point of confusion—particularly on 2007–2011 models—is the belief that the upper portion of the center stack (the area that most often cracks or breaks) is a separate, replaceable piece due to its different color and plastic texture. This is incorrect.
The center stack assembly is manufactured as a single molded unit. The upper section, including the vent surround and SRS indicator area, is permanently integrated into the main panel and cannot be replaced separately.
The difference in color and plastic finish is a result of manufacturing and material choices, not modular construction.
Removable Subcomponents #
There are only two removable trim pieces commonly associated with the center stack assembly:
- Radio bezel – Surrounds the head unit and can be removed independently. There are differences in this piece. They vary depending on the radio installed in your element and the interior trim color
- Shifter bezel – Surrounds the gear selector and is a separate component. There are differences in this piece. They vary depending on the transmission type and the interior trim color
Common Failure Modes #
Frequently reported issues include:
- Cracking near mounting points
- Broken vent fins
- UV-related plastic embrittlement
- Warping or discoloration
Later-model panels are particularly prone to damage during removal or reinstallation. Avoid removing in colder temperatures.
OEM Part Numbers #
Honda assigned different part numbers to the center stack assembly based on model year and interior color, rather than structural design changes. All later-model panels share the same basic construction, with differences limited primarily to finish.
| Model Years | Part Number | Trim / Finish | Notes |
| 2003–2006 | 77252-SCV-A01ZA | Dark metal / gray | No SRS cutout; thicker, more durable plastic |
| 2007–2011 | 77252-SCV-A04ZA | Dark metal / gray | Integrated SRS cutout; thinner plastic |
| 2007–2011 | 77252-SCV-A04ZC | Dark interior variant | Structurally identical to A04ZA; color variation |
| 2007–2011 (SC) | 77252-SCV-A03ZB | Piano black | Element SC only; integrated SRS cutout |
The final two characters of the part number (ZA, ZB, ZC) indicate interior color or finish, not a change in structural design.
Compatibility Warning #
While physically similar, center stack assemblies are not universally interchangeable across all model years.
- 2003–2006 panels do not include a mounting provision for the SRS indicator light.
- 2007–2011 vehicles require a properly mounted and visible SRS indicator to function correctly and pass inspection.
- Installing an early panel into a later vehicle requires an appropriate solution to relocate or mount the SRS indicator.
Failure to account for these differences may result in warning lights, inspection issues, or improper airbag system deployment.
Availability and Discontinuation #
The OEM center stack assembly has been discontinued by Honda.
- Some online parts catalogs continue to list these components as available.
- Orders are frequently canceled after purchase due to supplier backorders or discontinued status.
- Availability confirmation may take days or weeks before a cancellation notice is issued.
As a result, sourcing new OEM center stack assemblies is unreliable, and most replacements are sourced from used, refurbished, or adapted panels.
Replacement and Repair Options #
Used OEM Panels #
- Salvage-yard panels remain the most common source
- Early (2003–2006) panels are generally more durable
- Cosmetic condition varies widely
Cross-Year Adaptation #
Some owners choose to install a 2003–2006 center stack into a 2007–2011 vehicle due to the improved durability of the earlier design. This approach requires accommodation for the relocated SRS indicator. Aftermarket adapters are available.
Structural Reinforcement and Refinishing #
Due to widespread cracking and cosmetic wear, some in the community have found ways to refinishing and reinforcement weak areas; extending the service life of existing panels. These methods typically address:
- Structural weakness on the top dash area
- Surface wear and discoloration
SRS Indicator Considerations (2007–2011) #
For 2007–2011 vehicles, the center stack must properly support and display the SRS indicator light. Any replacement or modification must ensure:
- Correct positioning
- Secure mounting
- Unobstructed visibility
Improper handling of the SRS indicator may result in warning lights or inspection failures.
SRS Indicator Adaptation (2007–2011)
#
When installing a 2003–2006 center stack assembly into a 2007–2011 Honda Element, the relocated SRS indicator light must be securely mounted and clearly visible.
Aftermarket and custom solutions exist to address this requirement, typically involving an adapter bracket that allows the SRS indicator to be mounted in the correct position within the earlier panel. This approach commonly requires the use of 2007–2011 center air vents, which include an open provision for the SRS indicator.
While the center vents are interchangeable between model years, the later (2007–2011) vents differ in design and provide the necessary opening for proper SRS indicator placement.
Any solution used must ensure proper indicator visibility and compliance with applicable safety and inspection requirements.
Common Mistakes #
Common errors when replacing or repairing the center stack include:
- Assuming all years are interchangeable
- Breaking mounting tabs during removal
- Ignoring SRS indicator requirements
- Purchasing “available” OEM panels without confirmation

Notes #
Later-model center stack assemblies are widely regarded as less durable than earlier versions. As OEM availability has declined, refurbishment, adaptation, and reinforcement solutions have become increasingly common within the Honda Element community.
